RAR Blanket CAL: Part 6

Hi Zooty Owl CAL-ers.   Welcome to Part 6 of the RAR Blanket CAL.

This week we will be joining the Wheel of Time Squares and crocheting our first vertical stripes.

This week we will be joining the Wheel of Time Squares and crocheting our first vertical stripes.

RIBBONS OF HOPE:  VERTICAL STRIPES

PATTERN TERMS:    US

YARN:  Elle Charity Chunky (12 ply).   Stylecraft Special Chunky is an excellent quality / great value alternative yarn.

HOOK SIZE:  5.50mm (I/9 US or 5 CANADIAN)

NOTE:  Gauge is not too important with this project. Yarn thicknesses vary somewhat from brand to brand as do the tensions of individual crocheters.  The most important thing is that your tension remains even throughout the project.

COLOURWAY:   Each crocheter may choose his / her own colour layout - colour changes / breaks are suggestions only.

STRIPES are worked alternating right side and wrong side of your work, so turn work at the end of every row.

IMPORTANT:  Read through pattern before starting to crochet

Joining:  We will be using my VISIBLE JOIN METHOD.  The VISIBLE JOIN is a very forgiving joining method, which gives you a pretty “stitched” look on the right side of your work.  (This join is especially useful when joining squares with uneven stitches or for crocheters with an uneven tension).

Begin by joining the 5 Wheel of Time squares into a strip:

Wheels Strip  = 5 x Wheel of Time Squares (20cm x 20cm)

To obtain a straight border each corner space counts as 1 stitch

(1ch + 2dc) corner + 9dc, 2fptrc, 9dc (side,) + (2dc + 1ch) corner = 26sts per square

When joining the Wheel of Time Squares, crochet the sc of the join in every 2nd space between dc posts (i.e skip 2dc posts) with 2ch between each sc.  (The Visible Join on my blog is demonstrated joining granny squares together – in that case you will join in the spaces between 3dc groupings)

NOTE:   1 Foundation row of sc and 8 x rows of Granny Stripes worked along the Left Side of the Wheels Strip (this is especially important if you have a specific colour order!!)

RIBBONS OF HOPE GRANNY STRIPE

Foundation Row:   With RS facing work a standing sc into the corner 2ch of the first square in the strip;  work 1sc into the top of each st, when you reach a corner on a square 1sc into corner, 1dc into loop of  join, 1sc into corner on next square.   Repeat across all squares, ending with sc in last 2ch corner.  Fasten off yarn.

Stitch Count:  130sc and 4dc = 134sts

Row 1:  With RS facing join yarn with a standing dc in beginning sc;  2dc into same sc;  skip 3 sc, 3dc into next sc;  *skip 2sc, 3dc into next sc* repeat *to* 44 times.  Fasten off yarn.  Turn work.
Stitch Count:  45 x 3dc groups

Row 2:  With WS facing join yarn in beginning dc;  4ch (counts as 1dc, 1ch) (or in new colour work a standing dc, ch1);  *3dc into next space between 3dc groups* repeat *to* 43 times more; 1ch, skip 2dc, 1dc into last dc.   Fasten off yarn.  Turn work.

Stitch count:  1dc, 1ch;  44 x 3dc groups;  1ch, 1dc (134dc and 2 x 1ch spaces)

Row 3:  With RS facing work a standing dc in beginning dc of previous row;  2dc into same st as join, skip 1ch space, *3dc into next space between 3dc groups* repeat *to* 42 times more, skip 1ch sp, work 3dc into the top of the 3ch (or standing dc).  Fasten off yarn.   Turn work.

Stitch count:  45 x 3dc groups (135dc)

Row 4:  Repeat Row 2
Row 5:  Repeat Row 3
Row 6:  Repeat Row 2
Row 7:  Repeat Row 3
Row 8:  Repeat Row 2
